ODINISM: Our Heritage and Identity by Heimgest

The Odinic Rite celebrates our own unique Folk Faith, and in present day

society its existence is in itself something to celebrate because it affirms that

against huge odds our Holy Faith has never died.

To survive and flourish we must be able to fend for ourselves, for no-one else

will fend for us - but that is the way of the Northern Peoples. We survived and

flourished with no help from anyone but ourselves (and the Gods). When our

ancestors' harvests were poor, and starvation stalked the land, they had no

stranger people to organise 'Band Aid' or any other aid. So it was in all areas of

life - our forbears lived with the constant threat of destruction.

Today, materially, we seem to be far more secure, but again our Folk face

extinction. In the apace of a century our percentage of the world's population

has plummeted to under 10%, our homelands have large and rapidly breeding

alien communities, and stranger people control most of our 'wealth', and dictate

to our supposed 'leaders'. Yet, in these dark times, the sacred light of our Faith

still glows. A return to our Ancestral Faith is a promise of survival, and in this

we must rely on ourselves; we must be dedicated and strong. Remember also

that our religion is a living faith, and no amount of purely academic knowledge

(important as it may be) can equal the experience of actually feeling and living

Odinism, the spiritual heritage of our people, our birthright. It is heartening to

see our kin in countries across Midgarth claiming again this right.

The Odinic Rite encourages the practice of all positive aspects of our religion,

and there are many. One of the most important is performing the Blots, when

we can very consciously link with our comrade Odinists in honouring our

Gods. The Blots are the celebration of our Gods by their People, and a blessing

of their People from our Gods. In performing each Blot we consciously affirm

again our past, present, and continuing biological and spiritual link with our

Ancestors, Lands and Gods. We, the Odinic Rite, are a manifestation of that

link.

Odinism gives us our identity, and identity is vital, for an individual, and for a

race. Many of today's problems, personal, national, and global, stem from a

loss of identity. We are in an unnatural situation, for while it is socially

acceptable, in tact seen as desirable, for all other ethnic groups to feel a pride in

their culture, their heritage, the same does not apply to us.

Backbreaking stances are taken by established authority, and draconian laws

are passed, to ensure that the customs of stranger peoples are protected,

respected, and encouraged, but we are taught to belittle and forget our own. We

are constantly made to feel guilty for our successes, ashamed of our heritage.

The virtues of other peoples are extolled, but our own neglected.

This perverse, twisted teaching is found on every level, from cheap soap-operas

to academic works. But to survive, to flourish, we must preserve our identity,

and there is nothing that more clearly defines this than our people's native,

organic religion, because a Native Faith is the sum of a Folk - what it was, what

it is, and what it can be.

The loss, or blurring of our identity was inevitable once our people were

converted to a faith which was not their own - a religion which taught that a

stranger God was the only God, and that a stranger people were the Chosen

People - a religion which taught a disgust of life and of the Earth, and which

taught that we are all guilty of some awful inherent lain' - a religion which

'ungodded' nature.

It was our Folk then, more than others, who were enslaved by this alien faith,

and as we, more than others, have influenced world events, the harm we have

done has been worldwide.

We know that each Folk (and therefore the world) is best served by it's own

way. For the Japanese it is Shinto, for the Indians it is Hinduism - for our Folk

that way is Odinism. It reflects our true character and inspiration.

Odinism is not a rigidly dogmatic religion. Many approaches to our faith exist,

and function side by side, but there must be recognisable parameters within

which it operates or our identity is obscured or lost.

Odinism is a living faith; it evolves; yet it maintains the timeless spiritual

essence of our people. It is a way of life, a celebration of life, too vast to be

encapsulated in words alone, yet simple enough to feel inwardly, and that

intuitive wisdom should find outer expression in our actions. Odinism is the

love of a family, the giving and receiving of hospitality. It is loyalty. It is the

striving to live decent, honourable lives. It is a million things - and IT IS

OURS! It cements our identity and gives us freedom.

Today many mistake freedom for lack of responsibility. Some will say "I want

to be free - no rules - no restraints - no discipline!" This idea is an absurdity,

garbage spouted by the foolish, the perverse, and the pretentious. It is a lie of

the exploiter. We are not separate from nature, from creation - nothing is - and

nature has immutable laws. Some people may not like this, but it is a fact of

existence, and Odinism accepts it.

Nature is full of diversity, and our faith reflects and respects this. Our own folk

have always been individualistic, and Odinism reflects this also. There is room

in our faith for differing views and perceptions. This is good and healthy, but

still there is the apparent paradox that to be truly free, and remain free, one

must also have responsibility, because each individual is part of the whole. As

individuals we are part of the folk. To aid the folk aids the individual and our

personal future is part of our people's future. As Odinists we serve our folk and

ourselves - when our people are free, the individual will also be free. If an

individual separates himself from his race he loses his heritage because he loses

the heritage of his people. He becomes 'outcast', cut off from past and future,

and with no identity in the present. To defend your people's identity is to

defend your own.

An outward expression of this truth is the Odinic Rite's structure. The Rite does

not snuff out individuality but offers channels for its expression for the good of

all. Firstly we have individual Apprentices, who if they feel sufficiently

committed, may be professed into Odin's Holy Nation. This is a solemn and

binding oath before Gods and men. A few may take this lightly in this Age of

fast foods, fast entertainment, and fast values. In a material sense such folk may

or may not prosper, but spiritually they damage themselves, and distance

themselves from the Folk Soul, the Gods, and their own true worth. Most of

those men and women who take the Oath of Profession remain true; they wear

the 'Torc' as a token of honour.

An individual, Apprentice or Professed, can become a member of a Hearth,

which allows each person another way of growing within a supportive unit.

Each member also supports the Hearth. Every Hearth, as a unit, will develop its

own identity within the greater body of the Odinic Rite. Some will stress the

development of esoteric aspects, some cultural, some practical, or some may

have come together around a common interest. Our faith has many facets.

Hearths may come together for joint activities such as festivals, camps and

moots.

Our structure provides a solid framework to build on. It should be a circle of

loyalty, and it ensures our unique identity.

Our Faith, Heritage and Identity - Part 3

This is an important time for our movement, one of those times of extra

potency when we can use our limited resources for positive advance.

When our faith was supplanted by the alien creed from the Levant and its later

outgrowth, materialism, our Gods did not cease to exist, but our people ceased

to recognise them. Though buried beneath layers of poison, the roots of our

faith remained. Our Gods still spoke to us - but our folk did not know where

these voices came from. Those who accepted them as the sound of the 'God

Force', knew only the alien desert God and much that was Odinic was

attributed to Christianity. People speak of 'decent christian values' when most

of these have nothing to do with Christianity, but are the simple codes of

decency observed in any 'civilised' society.

Many great adventures and landmarks of civilisation have been attributed to

'Christian' inspiration, but it was not the voice of the Judeo/Christian God that

stirred the blood and soul of our people. Those who rejected the God of the

Bible, or any God, considered the inspirations and advances to be due to man

alone. But our Gods remained to whisper to us.

Now, again we see people searching for the Gods' voices, and many are

confused. Centuries of propaganda and domination are not quickly undone and

for many of our folk identity is clouded. You will find some who have rejected

one alien deity only to follow another just as foreign; who may proclaim that an

ethnic religion is best for the folk from whom that religion evolved, but at the

same time involve themselves in all manner of alien religious systems, trying

them on like shirts - one week Egyptian, one week Black African - any Gods or

magic they can find except their own. How did this come about? Why will

some rightly proclaim that the monuments built by our ancient ancestors are

holy sites, worthy of respect and protection, but deem the blood continuance of

the people who built them as not worth the same respect?

Some of these people are just weak, some are perverse, but many simply do not

know their own identity, or having been conditioned by the 'official line' feel

ashamed of it. They hear the voices of the Gods still, but cannot find their

source. They have lost their way, and the signposts are hidden.

Part of our task is to guide these lost ones back to their natural organic faith.

Odinism gives us our real identity. It is complete, it has its history, its

mythology, folklore and magic, and code of ethics, but for many folk today it

seems a hard path to follow, for it recognises that life and nature are not all

sweetness. Truth sometimes stings. Odinists accept responsibility for their own

actions, and this is contrary to what passes for ethics in this degenerate age. We

could go along with this approach, hoping to boost our membership, but in so

doing we would cease to be Odinists.

So we stand in defence of our ancient faith and see its fresh green shoot once

again emerging through the deadwood and tangle, at once a source of joy and a

reason for dread. To see this beautiful and pure shoot stirs the heart of every

true man and woman, because it is a wonderful and holy thing. It is proof of

our links with the past, it is a token of beauty in this time of ugliness, and it is a

promise of a bright and noble future - it is sacred.

But now that it has emerged from the soil it is exposed to all the myriad

dangers which seek to sever us from our past, corrupt and exploit beauty, and

strangle hope. It must be nurtured and protected lest it be crushed and twisted,

but we must also ensure that we don't smother it and hold back its growth. It is

our responsibility to ensure that this shoot grows strong and healthy, and these

are dangerous times!

There are those who have a vested interest in stopping our folk from finding

their way back to their own organic faith; there is the widespread apathy

amongst many of our kin; there is the confusion of those who seek, but with

blinkered eyes. There are some who say they are Odinists, but who lack the

courage to move forward. Then there are those who want to jump on the

bandwagon, the inadequate, the egotistical, the perverse; those who want to

subvert and mislead.

We must learn from past error, in order to ensure our future, and avoid the

petty schisms which have plagued our people throughout history. The highly

motivated and organised Christians routed and dominated a strong and vibrant

but fragmented society. We must not let this happen again. We must be united,

ten thousand voices shouting at cross-purposes are a mere rabble - one hundred

shouting in unison are a dynamic force. We are the vanguard, we blaze the trail

- happy to know that it is we who will make a future for our FAITH, FOLK and

FAMILY!

Our Faith, Heritage and Identity - part 4

First published in ORB No. 108, May 1991

The way forward for our Faith is not an easy one, but most worthwhile things

are not easily obtained. Discipline and commitment are vital for any

movement, spiritual, physical or mental; huge patience and perseverance are

needed. Our path will not always be exciting or glamorous - we are the road

builders, we may not be the ones who later walk down that road in this life. We

may be ridiculed or scorned, lies and smears may be made against us, and some

of these may even come from those we trusted.

We are the ones who must make the greatest sacrifices now - sacrifices of time,

effort and money - so that our children, and their children, will benefit. But

each sacrifice, each gift, receives a gift in return. Maybe not wealth or fame,

but satisfaction no gold could buy.

There will be times of disillusion and frustration, because the restoration of our

religion brings greater awareness with it. Suddenly it will seem more painful

and enraging to see the ugliness around in our cities, the senseless cruelty, the

ignorance, the destruction of Land and Folk. With deeper awareness comes

deeper troughs of gloom, but also higher peaks of elation.

There may be times when we feel nearly crushed, with no strength to carry on;

times when all seems doomed and hopeless. Then life can be bleak, but we are

not alone - the spirits of our ancestors are with us - the Gods are with us - we

need only to look for them within ourselves, and around us, within nature. They

bring the strength to overcome despair. Each of us has access to that strength, it

is in our blood, our hearts, and our spirit.

The practice of Odinism will not make problems vanish, but it gives us the will

to face, and the strength to fight against and overcome them.

With the restoration of our community to our Gods and Folk Soul comes an

inner knowledge of ourselves, of our place in the Mutiverse, the knowledge of

a divine spark within each of us. We see the manifestation of the God force

everywhere, around and within us. We see them in the vast majesty of a

northern forest, in a single blade of grass; we hear it in the roar of stormy sea,

and in a child's laughter. Wherever it manifests we can recognise it.

Yes, our path is sometimes hard, but it is a noble way, and it is ours - OUR

FAITH - OUR HERITAGE - OUR IDENTITY. We are of the Gods, and now

is the time in which we have begun the restoration of the beauty of our Faith in

Midgarth. It is we who hold the flame, we who must nurture the shoot. . It is

we who must show our Folk the way back to their true Faith - their spiritual

birthright.

BE UPLIFTED, THEN, FOR ODINISTS SAY 'YES!' TO LIFE,

AND THE HIGH ONES ARE WITH US.

HAEL TO THE AESIR - HAEL TO THE VANIR!

HAEL TO OUR FAITH, FOLK AND FAMILIES!
